Lecture 6 - Week 9

Lecture:

Notes from class - refining ideas:

Colour Scheme idea:

We are going to continue developing these ideas and refine what we want on the website and in the brochure. We need to keep our posters etc really child focused so that they want to come and drag their parents along.

NZ Opera Analysis

New Zealand Opera site is a site advertising the NZ opera events over New Zealand and the shows, where they are traveling to and a little bit of information on them.

Its goal is to inform the audience about the show and draw people in to want to buy tickets and travel to attend.

The look and feel compliments the feel of a stage show and really adds to the drama, the imagery flows nicely through and the use of gold bold colours shows the sophistication relating to the target audience.

It is clear the hierarchy of the webpage is the main focus is the shows that are currently on and the website is purely about them, not about the NZ Opera as a company.

The site is very easy to navigate and the use of the navigation bar always floating at the top ensures you can easily find your way around this webpage.

350 Website analyse

350 is a website dedicated to seeing positive change in peoples views towards climate issues, such as fossil fuels.
They have an array of different campaigns going around the world has it is their goal to raise global awareness of climate issues.
The site is easy to navigate and has the information laid out in a clear and easy way to learn about these issues.
The site has a nice balance between communicating the necessary information and being aesthetically interesting giving it a smart look.
The site has a stationary image in the background and the sites information scrolls over top of this image.

Lecture 5 - Homework - Developing Style ideas

Trasher hunt posters in various styles -

I created these four posters to try some different styles and ways to represent the event. I particularly like the fourth poster as it relates to rubbish specifically with the net capturing it.

Lecture 5 - Week 9 - Interim Critique

Interim Critique -

This critique went well, from here we have decided we are going with the trasher hunt as it is best targeted at children, below is what we have to do for Thursday's class:

Lecture 4 - Preparation for Interim Critique

Inspirational Styles and ideas for our 'Trasher Hunt" theme:

Poster 1 for interim critique:

This poster discusses our event in a light way for children. It is fun and light with a children's book style. It uses the pun of trash-treasure hunt to draw attention and impact.

Inspirational Styles and ideas for our "Beach Rave & Save" theme:

Poster 2 for interim critique:

This style is funky and beach-surfer style, it is to attract teenagers to this fun event.

The words rave and save rhyme for attention and impact with a ringy tone keeping it hip for the teenage bracket.
"Hey bro you coming to the rave and save this Sunday?"
"Of course man"

- Using the same theme and grow the concept in the same light
- Crop the image and ideas
- Use different styles and copies
- One short distinct sentence
- If struggling for ideas use random word generator

Critique with Fay on existing ideas:

- We need to try something different, as a team we need to go back to the drawing board and come up with new fresh ideas, it is more about having a range of ideas in these early stages instead of becoming trapped like a small gazzel.

Back to brainstorming ideas, thinking of key themes and new topics:

Lecture 3 - Homework - Initial write-up for webpage ideas

Introduction to Steve:

Things we need on Steve's webpage which relates to kids:

'Catchy' headings for posters:

Revising the brief:

I have since revised the brief and realised that the brief is to redesign an existing webpage and event resource page. We need to think of a way to re-design the original webpage with a target audience of children using the same information and not changing the event too much.

Lecture 3 - Homework - Researching existing organisations

Researching Children organisations:

Looking at Harold - Life Education Trust

Life Education is a preventative approach. We teach children about the wonder of life, themselves, and other people, with the aim of showing them how to reach their full potential. Life Education does not necessarily work on changing children's behaviour, it works on changing desires. Rather than frightening children with various forms of scare tactics, the Life Education philosophy focuses on creating a sensitivity to values which lead to an understanding and appreciation of human life. This enables the child to make decisions about any negative influences that might impede the development of their fullest potential.

Life Education Trust is a not for profit organisation which travels to schools upon invite to teach children.
Harold is the figure that children get to meet which is fun and enjoyable, and something which we would like to have similar through our assignment.

Undercover Cody the Sun Smart Turtle:

This is targeted slightly younger than we intended with starting at the age of three. But the games and stories with the talking as in its the mascots webpage are similar attributes the two sites share.

Notes on the two children targeted organisations:

Designing Websites for Kids - Tips

Bright vivid colours make impacts in children's minds, drawing attention for much longer.
A happy mood, children will want to return to a webpage if it is happy and fun.
Elements from nature, children are stimulated by what they know and can relate to.
Larger than life design - large type, large call to action, large buttons.
Animated characters - that talk and grab attention
Depth in design - depth with backgrounds, spaces that feel 'real' often executed through cartoon type feeling
Large call to action areas
User interaction through sounds and animation
Interaction through videos and games.
Changing the cursor of the computer to something fun and fresh
Break free of an overly structured layout, try to break the grid and change it up

Things you need on a children's website -

- Promote Education
- Have information for parents
- Test it with a child and see what they think of the webpage

Some children-focus'ed webpages -

All these webpages are very bright and light hearted, they all use a figure and a sort of person or animation to reach out to children. They are all very fun and interactive as well.

The downside to webpages like this is that their technical design is not strong. We need to investigate designs for children that are going to also be strong for adults and be appealing pieces of design work.

Some children's webpages which hold more design principals:

These webpages are all very interactive and fun, they have bright colours, cool animations and quirky lines and squiggles to mountain the interest of children. But with this they are all created sticking to a grid, using size and scale and all up they are nicely designed fun sites children would like to go on.
