Lecture 3 - Homework - Researching existing organisations

Researching Children organisations:

Looking at Harold - Life Education Trust

Life Education is a preventative approach. We teach children about the wonder of life, themselves, and other people, with the aim of showing them how to reach their full potential. Life Education does not necessarily work on changing children's behaviour, it works on changing desires. Rather than frightening children with various forms of scare tactics, the Life Education philosophy focuses on creating a sensitivity to values which lead to an understanding and appreciation of human life. This enables the child to make decisions about any negative influences that might impede the development of their fullest potential.

Life Education Trust is a not for profit organisation which travels to schools upon invite to teach children.
Harold is the figure that children get to meet which is fun and enjoyable, and something which we would like to have similar through our assignment.

Undercover Cody the Sun Smart Turtle:

This is targeted slightly younger than we intended with starting at the age of three. But the games and stories with the talking as in its the mascots webpage are similar attributes the two sites share.

Notes on the two children targeted organisations:

Designing Websites for Kids - Tips

Bright vivid colours make impacts in children's minds, drawing attention for much longer.
A happy mood, children will want to return to a webpage if it is happy and fun.
Elements from nature, children are stimulated by what they know and can relate to.
Larger than life design - large type, large call to action, large buttons.
Animated characters - that talk and grab attention
Depth in design - depth with backgrounds, spaces that feel 'real' often executed through cartoon type feeling
Large call to action areas
User interaction through sounds and animation
Interaction through videos and games.
Changing the cursor of the computer to something fun and fresh
Break free of an overly structured layout, try to break the grid and change it up

Things you need on a children's website -

- Promote Education
- Have information for parents
- Test it with a child and see what they think of the webpage

Some children-focus'ed webpages -

All these webpages are very bright and light hearted, they all use a figure and a sort of person or animation to reach out to children. They are all very fun and interactive as well.

The downside to webpages like this is that their technical design is not strong. We need to investigate designs for children that are going to also be strong for adults and be appealing pieces of design work.

Some children's webpages which hold more design principals:

These webpages are all very interactive and fun, they have bright colours, cool animations and quirky lines and squiggles to mountain the interest of children. But with this they are all created sticking to a grid, using size and scale and all up they are nicely designed fun sites children would like to go on.
